A strike by hundreds of airline service workers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is expected to continue into a second day today. About 2,500 passenger service workers at LAX called a strike and walked off their jobs on Thursday after labor talks broke down with their employers, threatening to cripple operations at the world’s fifth busiest airport and third busiest in the United States. The strike will likely cause inconvenience and troubles for travelers using LAX during the Labor Day long weekend, which kicks off on Friday. An estimated 825,000 travelers are expected to board flights during the upcoming holiday weekend.
The striking workers belong to the Service Employees International Union Local 1871. “We have been giving proposals to improve service and security for the airport and airlines, but there’s been no serious response from them,” union spokesman Mike Chavez says. The Los Angeles Daily News says the striking workers are demanding pay hikes, more health benefits and better job training.
Airport officials declined to immediately comment on the strike, and union leaders didn’t say how long the strike will last.
