While traveling a hotel room is considered to be your second home with some exceptions – strangers might have slept there, and the hotel staff may not be as peculiar about keeping the room clean as you are. You might prefer to stay at a hotel as you get all the comforts and time to relax when someone else is there to do all your work. But, in terms of sanitization, a neatly made bed does not equal a germ-free room.
A recent study conducted by the University of Virginia found that people infected with a cold who spent a night in a hotel room left contagious germs on nearly 35 percent of objects they touched. Are you prepared for a dirty bedspread, a scummy toilet or even a bed bug infestation? It’s highly unlikely that a slightly soiled bathroom floor will put your life in danger, yet an unclean hotel room could affect your health. Here are a few tips that will help you to make sure that you get a clean hotel room on your next trip.

One thing I check first in hotel room is its bathroom.
I love traveling too but I remember staying in this one hotel that smelled like being downwind of a row of porta-potties, mixed with cigar smoke…it was disgusting!Have you every had any bad experiences, please share!

I work with Hampton Inn, and I’d love to hear your horror stories! What’s the worst experience you’ve ever had at a hotel? (I always get a kick outta this!)
Also having sanitized tissue wipes are useful, then immediately clean around the toilet area, and perhaps the bed frame once you enter your room. Perhaps wipe inside the wardrobe/closet clothing cupboards as well. Maybe bring disposable food utensils like cups, plates, etc.
Also ask what detergents are used (by brand name) for washing dishes and bedding – Do they include premium liquids/powders that contain anti-bacterial additives? softeners, and fragrance additives? Are they sealed properly after use for re-cleaning, or are fresh detergent packs used for each cycle of cleaning?
Perhaps during winter or in extreme weather environment, bring (and possibly use) suitable standard medicines (syrups, lotions, ointments, etc – check with your doctor) to prevent getting sick and reduce exposure to bugs, and hence spreading germs to other hotel guests.
Maybe ask for a cleaning and training schedule and manuals. Query what methods/items are used- e.g. high powered vacuum cleaner, specific cleaning solvents, rinsing policy not only within your room, but adjacent rooms (to prevent possible transfer of germs from one room to another)…
That was a nice read
